If like many people, you would like to lose a good 5 pounds, whether it has been forever, or right after your holiday indulgence (from Christmas delicious eggnog to Thanksgiving pies and potatoes to Easter’s endless chocolate), you have probably realized how surprisingly difficult it is to shed even just one pound.
As a matter of fact, national health surveys have shown it, America is getting fatter. There are no secrets to losing weight. Everyone knows the formula, healthy eating and regular exercise.
However, what does healthy eating mean? With what you see in the internet, what spams your mailbox, what is published on the latest Cosmopolitan or what you see on TV, it can be difficult to tell apart the good from the bad.
To help you shed off some of the unwanted extra pounds, we put together, for your convenience, a list of the top 10 foods for weight loss. Of course, when eating you should not limit yourself to the following food, but by opting to incorporate these food in your daily (or weekly) meal plan, you will be able to control your weight more easily.
top 10 foods for weight loss
.
1. Oatmeal – Oatmeal is not only a delicious breakfast, but is also high in fibers. Food high in fibers tend to fill you up more and digest slower. Therefore, you will feel hungry less quickly.
2. Egg whites – Egg whites are high in proteins and low in fat, which makes it one of the best proteins for weight loss. Some people don’t like the fact that egg whites are tasteless. For a yummy recipe, try scramble eggs, by using one regular egg and adding some 6 eggs white (can be purchased at the store) and some veggies.
3. Salad greens – Lettuce, cabbage or any greens you can think of for your salad. They are super low in calories, low in fat and carbs, high in vitamins and minerals, salad greens are excellent weight loss foods, as long as you watch out those creamy salad dressings!
4. Broccoli – Broccoli is versatile vegetable. Eat them in a salad, eat them quickly blanches, stir-fry them, or eat them raw, with a light dipping sauce. Broccoli is high in nutrients such as vitamin A, C, acid folic, calcium and fibers.
5. Blueberries – Personally one of my favorite fruit. This superfood is full of antioxidants. Perfect in yogurt, oatmeal (see above), in a fruit salad or by themselves.
6. Grapefruits – Did you know that a recent study showed that, without altering their current diet, a group of people who ate half a grapefruit three times a day lost nearly 4 pounds each in 3 months. A mechanism that is yet to be understood, but an especially great way to help you lose weight.
7. Spinach – Low in calories, spinach is similar to lettuce in terms of calories, but way better in terms of nutrition. High in proteins, fibers, vitamin K and iron, spinach can be used in salads, in omelets, in soups and much more!
8. Brown rice – High in fibers, brown rice will give you that fuller feeling for longer than white rice, and will help your digestive tract overall.
9. Lean ground turkey – Simply because they taste good, are high in protein, low in fat and will keep you fuller longer.
10. Non fat cottage cheese – If you are craving for a lasagna, substitute non fat or low fat cottage cheese for your regular ricotta cheese. It will taste just as good, without the extra calories! (and oh… use whole wheat pasta as well!)
Remember to also add healthy fat to your meals. Healthy fat are monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3. You can find good fat in food such as avocado, walnuts, almonds, extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed and oily fish.
It is important to keep in mind that portioning the right amount of food is also very important to your diet. Remember that one portion of meat is the size of a deck of card, one portion of fruit is how much you can hold in one hand (an apple, a banana) and one portion of milk is the equivalent of half a size of a regular cup of coffee.
