Choosing the best thermometer for baby
.
Thermometers for babies are important devices to own at home. Babies are fragile, and on average, children will have on average 7 fevers per year. It is extremely important to monitor their body temperature when they are sick. By owning your own thermometer, you will be able to take better decision when baby is sick. Knowing the body temperature of your child will help you determine what to do in case of sickness.
What is baby’s normal temperature
Bathing your child can affect the body temperature. Therefore, wait at least 20-30 minutes after bath before taking the temperature. Normal resting temperature in infants usually vary between 37 to 37.5o Celsius (or 98.6 to 99.5o Fahrenheit).
Types of baby thermometers
There are several types of baby thermometers: baby ear thermometers, baby body thermometers (used under the armpit), baby rectal thermometers, oral thermometers (usually recommended for slightly older children) and even temporal artery or non contact infrared thermometers.
Each type of thermometer takes the temperature from different areas of the body, and the accuracy can vary slightly for many reasons. The area considered to provide the most accurate body temperature is usual the rectum. But because of their ease of use, to maintain, because they are not unpleasant for the child and because they are fairly affordable, baby digital ear thermometers are becoming more and more popular among families and even clinics.
What to choose?
Since they are often considered to be more precise, many still parents prefer to use rectal thermometers on infants. But every type of thermometer has their pros and cons. For example, while some babies are okay with having their temperature being taken rectally, other baby are very unhappy with this method. In this case, opt for a different method (armpit, ear, temporal, infrared).
