How useful are nursing pillows?

.
A nursing pillow is really a cushion shaped into a quarter or half moon and filled with different types of material, depending on the brand and the price you are willing to pay. While they are not a necessity per say, breastfeeding pillows can be useful in many ways. First, these specialized pillows can help with the positioning of the baby, and give the baby a more secure position while breastfeeding. They also allow the breastfeeding mom to find a more relaxing and comfortable position. It is ideally used when mom decides to lie down on the side, but can also be used between the knees, or can be folded to bring the legs higher.

They also provide the mom with more flexibility when she is breastfeeding. Because the baby is securely latch, breastfeeding mom can now feed herself (a hungry baby makes a hungry mom!), read a book, change the channel of the TV or even get some work done!

Nursing pillows can also help in other situations. For example, they are a great tool to help breastfeeding twins, or can even be used for bottle feeding. Overall, they simply provide both the baby and the newborn baby a more enjoyable and comfortable experience during breastfeeding.

So the answer to “is it useful” is yes, but now the question is how to choose?

Choosing your breastfeeding pillow

.
The normal length of a nursing pillow should average between 63 to 71 inches (160 to 180 cm), in order for the pillow to hug the mom tightly during feeding. There are many types of filling. The most common one type of filling are the polystyrene microbeads. These pillows have the advantage of being extremely comfy and light. If you like the idea of having an organic product, more and more manufacturers give the option of having a buckwheat hulls fill. Moreover, the buckwheat gives the pillow a more natural and pleasant smell, and makes the cushion ferm and comfy for both mom and baby. However, if you are allergic to wheat and other types of grains should opt for other types of material.
