While the original XBox did have a few gems in the RPG department, overall the selection was pretty poor at the best of times. In those days, if you wanted to play some great RPG’s, the PS2 was the system to have. It’s successor doesn’t suffer from this drought though, and these days you can find a deep and varied selection of RPG’s on the XBox 360. We’ve compiled what *we* consider to the the top 10 rpg games for the XBox 360.

Mass Effect
“I’m Commander Shephard and this is my favorite list of Top 10 XBox 360 Games on the internet!”
Although technically Mass Effect 2 fixes a lot of the problems of the first game, Mass Effect is still (in my opinion) the best RPG on the XBox 360. This game is the first in the epic trilogy uncovering the disappearance of the Prothean civilization, and what the Reapers are.
This game gets bonus points because its the only game that my girlfriend has actually *insisted* I play. Stroke of genius on Bioware’s part to include such a long and involved love story!

Mass Effect 2
A much cleaner and more refined version of the original Mass Effect, the sequel picks up where the original left off. I won’t spoil the story, but it really is worth playing the original before jumping into
Mass Effect 2.

Fable 2
A great sequel to the original XBox game, Fable 2 seeks to expand on the concepts of the first game. Every decision you make has an impact on the game as a whole, and can not only influence the development of your own character but possibly of the world at large. Lionhead has tried very hard to build a convincing world where your decisions have very real, very tangible repercussions.

Dragon Age: Origins
Another instant classic from Bioware, these guys just have the formula for an amazing RPG down to a science. This is more a traditional swords and sorcery style RPG, where you can play as either human,
dwarf, or elf. You will eventually make your way in the world and become a gray warden, helping to drive back the blight and defeat the Arch-Demon.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Who doesn’t love a game where the intro movie is voiced by Patrick Steward? Oblivion is pretty much the exact opposite of any JRPG you’ve ever played. The story is only vaguely laid out in front of you, after
which you’re left with a gigantic open world to explore. Follow any path you like, explore any caves you come across, and find your own way in the world. There is literally hundreds of hours of gameplay in Oblivion if you choose to seek it out.

Fallout: New Vegas
A simply fantastic expansion to Fallout 3, it was, in my opinion, better than the game it was expanding on. Fallout: New Vegas did everything “right” that Fallout 3 didn’t, including capturing more of the same magic and atmosphere that made the original games so charming and addictive.

Fallout 3
It’s been over 10 years but we finally get another in the series. Fallout 3 is the next in the wildly popular Fallout franchise, brought up to date with a brand new 3D graphics engine thanks to the guys at Bethesda (makers of Oblivion). If you liked Oblivion, chances are you’ll love Fallout 3 since its basically Oblivion with guns. Personally I felt that they didn’t really capture the light-hearted mood that made the first one so compelling, but Fallout 3 is still a good game in it’s own right.

Final Fantasy XIII
This was a bit of a difficult choice, as many are divided on whether Final Fantasy XIII truly is a “good” game or not. The problem with the game being that it takes a good 10-20 hours to get “good”, after which its a truly amazing game. Whether or not your choose to tough it out is up to you, although we certainly recommend that you do.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope
There’s nothing groundbreaking in Star Ocean: The Last Hope, you’ve seen everything it has to offer before. What it does is packages it all together nicely. The cutscenes are nicely made, the battles are interesting enough to keep your attention, and the story has enough depth to keep you hooked for the the 40-50 hours or so that it will take you to finish this game. Overall, a nice and polished addition to the XBox 360′s RPG arsenal.

Lost Odyssey
An excellent little JRPG that closely resembles the Final Fantasy series. If this is the start of a new franchise on the XBox 360, we can’t wait to see what’s next.
