Top 10 3D Web Browser MMORPGs

The internet has changed a lot in the last few years, and one of the major innovations going on right now is the ability to play games in your browser. Games that 5 years ago would have required a lengthy download and installation now can play effortlessly as soon as you visit the web page. Although browser mmorpg’s could still be considered in their infancy stages, there are quite a few impressive ones to choose from. Here are our top 10 3D web browser mmorpgs.

 runescape mmorpg

Runescape has been around the internet for over a decade now, and shows no sign of slowing down. It’s a bit like World of Warcraft, complete with quests, dungeons, monsters, and a medieval setting. The world is quite large and there is a lot of freedom in what you can do.

 dead frontier mmo

Dead Frontier

Probably the best zombie survival MMORPG ever made, and it’s free and available in your browser, what more could you ask for? Dead Frontier takes place in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by hordes of vicious zombies. Band together with fellow survivors, scavange for new weapons and armor or barter in the merchant zones. Definitely a game worth checking out.

 milmo

Awesome new action mmorpg from Aeria games, Milmo has just reached open beta so give it a shot. The game runs off of the Unity client and features state of the art graphics and technology, unlike the Shockwave and Java based games listed. If you like open worlds with puzzles, fun animated characters and lots of customization then Milmo is definitely for you. It’s amazing to see just how far browser technology has come.

 fusion fall

Cool new sci-fi browser mmorpgs from the Cartoon Network (weird huh?). It uses a lot of the characters from the Cartoon Network universe, so you should see some familiar faces once you create a character for yourself. Lots of cool features like grouping, quests (or missions to go along with the sci-fi theme), and collectible miniatures.

Jaw dropping mmorpg from Sony Online Entertainment (makers of Everquest). Do anything you want in this massive and extremely detailed world. Defeat monsters, discover treasures and items of glory, or just hang out with your pet, it’s up to you. If this is any indication of the direction that browser mmorpgs are heading, we may be seeing free games in the browser the same level of quality and detail as major games like World of Warcraft very soon.

 pets vs monsters

Up until recent years, browser based mmorpgs were the domain of little indie developers (see Runescape and Sherwood), but increasingly we’re seeing big budget titles coming out of well known studios. Pets vs Monsters is a cute little kids game where you complete quests and fight monsters, brought to you by Funcom, the same company behind “Age of Conan” and the upcoming “Secret World”. The game is still only in Beta, so expect it to get even better in time.

 juggernaut

Juggernaut Game

An interesting real-time combat oriented mmorpg, Juggernaut features a complex battle system that will take quite a bit of skill to master. Once in the game, you choose sides in an exciting conflict between 3 different factions all vying for power. There’s also a downloadable client available which runs a bit quicker since you don’t need to stream in any assets during play.

 sherwood dungeon

Sherwood Dungeon

view game

Perfect example of a browser mmorpg, Sherwood Dungeon is a modest little mmorpg running off the Shockwave platform. It’s a lot of fun, as you can be in the game and exploring within seconds. The game comes complete with quests, mounts, and an infinitely deep dungeon. Another interesting note is that the entire game was created by one man, Gene Endrody.

 sociotown

Sociotown

Weird name but don’t let you put that off, it’s quite a complete little social mmorpg. Log into Sociotown, customize your character, wander around town, do a little boxing, decorate your apartment, there’s a surprising amount of depth from this title from Outside the Box Software.

 war maker

War Maker

An impressive Shockwave based mmorpg like Sherwood Dungeon, although not quite as far along in development. The graphics are quite a bit better, and the world is much more impressive but it’s lacking in
content. There are no quests yet, but the game is still in Beta, so expect improvements and more content down the road.
